The Aroma Lift Technique: A Facial Massage Ritual for a Fresher, Brighter Look

If you're looking for a few minutes of self-care that might also leave your face looking a little less puffy and a lot more radiant, the Aroma Lift Technique is worth adding to your routine. It pairs gentle, direction-specific facial massage with Young Living's Aroma Life™ essential oil blend — a combination of sesame seed oil, cypress, marjoram, ylang ylang, and helichrysum.

Why This Technique Works

‍Your face has a network of lymphatic vessels that help clear fluid and support healthy-looking skin — but unlike your heart, the lymphatic system doesn't have its own pump. It relies on movement, including massage, to keep things flowing. That's the idea behind this technique: light, direction-specific strokes are designed to work with your facial lymphatics rather than against them.

The oils in Aroma Life were chosen for a reason. Cypress has long been used in aromatherapy for its astringent, tightening qualities and its traditional association with circulatory and lymphatic support. Helichrysum is well known in skincare circles for its soothing, skin-supporting properties, with early research pointing to anti-inflammatory and skin-healing potential. Marjoram and ylang ylang round out the blend with calming, grounding qualities that make this as much a moment of relaxation as a skincare step. ‍

A quick and honest note: research on facial massage and individual essential oils is still growing, and much of it is early-stage. What's well-established is that gentle massage can support circulation and create a temporary de-puffed, refreshed look; what's promising-but-preliminary is exactly how much oils like cypress and helichrysum add on top of that. I'd rather tell you that clearly than oversell it.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Roll Aroma Life below the collarbone.

Step 2: Massage from shoulder to center of neck, using light pressure, 3 times.

Step 3: Gently knead (pump) or squeeze the armpit in a pumping rhythm, 6 times.

Step 4: Roll Aroma Life under the chin, moving toward the earlobe, behind the ear, and down the neck to the collarbone.

Step 5: Rub fingers under the chin to the ear and down the side of the neck, across the collarbone, 10 times.

Step 6: Apply Aroma Life beside the nose, across the cheekbone to the ear. Glide fingers along these points toward the front of the ear, 3 times.

Step 7: Roll Aroma Life around the ear and massage in small circles, 3 times.

Step 8: Apply Aroma Life on the eyebrow and temple. Pinch across the eyebrow with thumb and index finger and lift up; rub the temple in a circular motion. Repeat each motion 3 times.

Step 9: Using fingertips, lightly massage from the top of the eyebrows to the hairline in small circular motions, 3 times.

Step 10: Slide fingers from the chin up to the ear along the jawline, then down the side of the neck to the collarbone and out to the armpit, 3 times.

Step 11: Knead (pump) or squeeze the armpit 5 times. ‍

Step 12: Repeat all steps on the other side of the face.

How Often to Do It — and What to Expect

I recommend doing this massage 3 times per week. With consistent use, many people notice improved skin clarity and suppleness, along with reduced puffiness, within about 6 weeks. As with any new skincare routine, results vary from person to person.

A Few Safety Notes

  • Always dilute essential oils per label instructions before applying to skin, and patch test 24 hours before first use.

  • Avoid this technique if you have active acne breakouts, open wounds, sunburn, or a skin condition that's currently flaring.

  • Keep oils away from the direct eye area.

  • If you're pregnant, nursing, or have a health condition, check with your doctor before introducing new essential oils into your routine.

  • Discontinue use if you notice irritation.
