Does Insurance Cover Lymphatic Drainage Massage? Here's the Honest Answer

This is one of the most practical questions I get, and the honest answer is: it depends on your plan, your reason for treatment, and your paperwork. Here's how to actually find out.

The Short Version

Most standard health insurance plans do not cover lymphatic drainage massage when it's booked for general wellness. Coverage becomes more possible when a session is tied to a specific, physician-documented medical need — most commonly post-surgical recovery or a diagnosed condition like lymphedema. ‍

When Coverage Is More Likely

  • Post-surgical lymphatic support prescribed or recommended by your surgeon

  • A diagnosed condition such as lymphedema, with a referral or letter of medical necessity from your physician

  • Treatment provided as part of a broader physical therapy or oncology rehabilitation plan

What to Ask Your Insurance Provider

If you think your situation might qualify, call the member services number on your insurance card and ask specifically:

  • Does my plan cover manual lymphatic drainage performed by a licensed massage therapist?

  • Do I need a physician's referral or a letter of medical necessity first?

  • Is there a specific CPT or billing code my provider needs to use?

What About FSA or HSA Funds?

This is often the easier path. Many clients successfully use FSA/HSA funds for MLD when they have a letter of medical necessity from their doctor on file. I'm happy to provide a superbill (an itemized receipt) that you can submit to your insurance or FSA/HSA administrator — just note that I'm not an in-network provider and don't bill nor deal with insurance directly. You will have to pay for your MLD at the time of service and file with your insurance to see if they will reimburse you.

Bottom Line

For general wellness visits, plan to pay out of pocket. For medically-indicated sessions, it's worth a phone call to your insurance provider before you book — and I'm glad to provide your receipt to support your claim either way.
