Is Lymphatic Drainage Massage Right for You? What to Know Before You Book

MLD is gentle, but "gentle" doesn't mean it's automatically right for everyone. Because the technique directly affects fluid movement in the body, a few conditions call for a conversation with your doctor before booking, and a few call for skipping it altogether. Here's an honest rundown.

Situations That Call for Medical Clearance First

  • Active cancer treatment or a recent cancer diagnosis

  • Congestive heart failure or other significant cardiac conditions

  • Kidney conditions, particularly those affecting fluid regulation

  • Blood clots or a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

  • Pregnancy (prenatal MLD requires trained, pregnancy-safe technique — always confirm your provider is trained in it, which I am.)

Situations Where MLD Should Generally Be Avoided

  • Active infection, fever, or feeling generally unwell

  • Untreated blood clots

  • Acute cellulitis or skin infection in the area to be treated

  • Severe, uncontrolled congestive heart failure

Why This Matters

Because MLD encourages fluid movement through the body, conditions that already involve fluid regulation, clotting, or infection need a doctor's input first — moving fluid in the wrong circumstances can occasionally do more harm than good. This isn't meant to scare anyone off; it's meant to make sure the people who do book are set up for a safe, comfortable experience.

What This Looks Like at Essential Vitality 4 Life

‍Every new client fills out an intake form covering relevant health history before their first session. If anything on that list applies to you, I'll ask a few follow-up questions, and in some cases I'll ask for a quick note from your physician before we move forward. This isn't extra hoops for the sake of it — it's how I make sure the session is actually good for you.

‍ ‍

This is general educational information, not medical advice. Please consult your physician if you have any of the conditions above or are unsure whether MLD is appropriate for you.
