Lymphatic Drainage vs. Regular Massage: How Do You Know Which One to Book?

If you're scrolling through a service menu trying to decide between Swedish massage and lymphatic drainage, here's the breakdown that usually helps clients decide.

The Goal Is Different

‍ A regular massage — Swedish, deep tissue, sports — is primarily focused on the muscles: releasing tension, improving mobility, and addressing soreness. Lymphatic drainage is focused on fluid movement through the lymphatic system, not the muscles themselves.

The Pressure Is Different

Regular massage uses moderate to firm pressure to reach muscle tissue. MLD uses light, rhythmic strokes designed to work with the lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin — pressing harder doesn't make it more effective, it actually works against the technique.

The Feeling Afterward Is Different

After a deep tissue massage, it's common to feel a little sore the next day, similar to a workout. After MLD, most clients feel lighter, less puffy, and more relaxed rather than sore.

Who Tends to Choose Which

  • Regular massage: muscle tension, tightness, soreness, stress relief

  • Lymphatic drainage: puffiness, fluid retention, post-procedure recovery, a gentler reset

Can You Get Both?

Yes — some clients alternate between the two depending on what their body needs that week, and I'm happy to help you figure out which fits a given visit if you're not sure. I also offer combo massages so that you can experience both in the same session, look for the Lymphatic Swedish Massage Combo when booking.
